The common theme- C.O.L.O.U.R.
I love colour. Colour is endless. Colour is everywhere. It is what drives my creative process. I am an eternal optimist who creates paintings to convey a sense of whimsy, joy and fun.
Pushing the boundaries leads me to paint “against the grain”- to go against my formal training and those rules that apply- linear perspective and scale. My striking paintings are made visually stimulating by contrasting hard edges and soft blending, dark and light colours. I like to use as many complementary colours as possible whithout creating a visual chaos.
I am not a folk artist, outsider artist or naive artist... I am an artist who loves to draw the viewer in with visually stimulating colours and soothing themes.
Why acrylic paint? I love the way rich opaque acrylic paint flows over a large canvas. It can be like frosting a cake, without all of the calories. I paint with passion, commitment and excitement. I love that acrylic paint dries quickly. As I have a young family, time is of the essence.
Why circles and little houses? Since childhood, I have been enamored with curves and miniatures. I feel that curves and circles can represent rebirth, woman, man, child, the world, the universe. Curves to me are like a mother’s arms circling a child. The miniature houses convey a simple life, filled with family, community and colour. Nova Scotia (Lunenburg area) and Bermuda with their brightly painted homes is where most of my family resides. My bright houses are a reflection of happy, simple times with family.
